Padang Merdeka in Kota Kinabalu came alive with the spirit of an American state fair for the Freedom 250 State Fair, held in conjunction with the 250th anniversary of American independence. Bringing together music, food, contests, games and community activities, the event created a lively and family-friendly celebration in the heart of Kota Kinabalu.
For YHP Event, the project was also an opportunity to bring an international celebration concept to life locally through detailed event management combining programme planning, technical production, activities and on-ground coordination.
The Freedom 250 State Fair was designed as more than just a formal celebration.Visitors were able to experience the fun and energy commonly associated with a traditional state fair, with activities happening throughout the venue from afternoon into the evening.
The programme began with the Freedom Fun Run, bringing participants together for an energetic start to the celebration.
Throughout the event, visitors could enjoy live entertainment including performances by the Pacific Partnership Band, together with DJ performances and other programme segments that kept the atmosphere lively throughout the day. Food stalls, activity booths and interactive games added to the overall fair experience, giving families and visitors plenty to explore around Padang Merdeka.
One of the highlights of the event was the Blue Ribbon Contest, inspired by the competition culture commonly found at American state fairs.The programme featured activities such as the Homemade Apple Pie Baking Contest, where participants showcased their baking skills, and the Hot Dog Eating Contest, which brought a more energetic and entertaining competitive element to the event.
These activities helped create a distinctive state fair atmosphere while also encouraging participation and interaction from the local community.Together with the food, games, entertainment and performances, the contests gave visitors different experiences to enjoy throughout the event rather than relying on a single stage programme.
From running activities and live music to competitions and interactive booths, the programme was planned to keep visitors engaged across different parts of the venue.Guests could move between the stage programme, food and beverage areas, activity booths and contest zones while enjoying the overall atmosphere of the celebration.
This combination of entertainment and interactive experiences helped transform Padang Merdeka into a vibrant community gathering space for the day.The event also reflected the cultural exchange behind the celebration — bringing elements of an American state fair to Sabah while creating an experience that was accessible and enjoyable for the local community.
